Martin Greif was born in the Bronx, New York and was an editor, publisher, writer and lecturer.
In 1982 he published a book called The Gay Book of Days - 'An evocatively illustrated who's who of who is, was, may have been, probably was, and almost certainly seems to have been gay during the past 5,000 years'. The book was published in the UK in 1985, around which time I purchased a copy, always having been fascinated by gay culture. Gay for Today was inspired by Martin Greif's book and although now well out of date, it was the starting point for mapping out who was to be featured. The passing of the years, an increasing openness on the part of society's attitudes towards homosexuality, and the Internet allow me to do the rest.Martin Greif also published and edited a large number of other books, mostly through the two publishing houses he and his partner founded, Main Street Press in the US and Orchard Hill Press in Ireland. He spent his latter years with his longtime work and life partner, Lawrence Grow, in County Cork, Ireland.
Larry Grow died from an AIDS-related stroke in 1991 and Martin Greif died from AIDS in 1996.
